id="article-main_title">
The Holy Land Experience: A Unique Biblical Theme Park in Orlando

The Orlando area is known for Disney World, Universal Studios and other exciting theme parks but these parks are not the end of the story. Orlando also has a biblical theme park, The Holy Land Experience, which is every bit as entertaining as the well-known secular attractions in this region. If you and your family are inspired by stories of the Bible, then The Holy Land Experience will provide you with an exciting and educative full-day experience. Let’s take a look at what you can expect to find at this park.

The main idea of this biblical park and museum is to bring the Bible to life and they do it by recreating the Holy Land as it existed 2000 years ago. So, in a sense, this park is like a time-machine that takes you back to the ancient era.

Featured exhibits help to recreate the time when the stories of the Bible unfolded. The Scriptorium Center is the more scholarly part of this park and it holds important ancient biblical manuscripts. Here is how the Holy Land Experience website describes it:

“The walk-through experience of The Scriptorium transports visitors to historical and geographical areas of the world where displayed biblical documents originated and gives guests a dramatic understanding of the history of the Bible, how it parallels the history of civilization, and the impact it has had upon the world.”

Another important exhibit is the Wilderness Tabernacle. This is a recreation of the mobile temple where the Israelites performed their worship during the forty years of wandering in the desert. The presentation is designed to provide visitors with an insight into the rituals and sacrifices offered during this era.

If you are curious to know what Jerusalem looked like 2000 years ago, then the Jerusalem Model A.D. 66 is the place to visit. This exhibit is the world’s largest indoor model of its kind. It is a 45 by 25 foot-long structure gives a stunning overview of what Jerusalem looked like at the height of its size and growth. Daily presentations tell the history of the city, from it’s beginnings as King David’s capital city to its destruction by the Romans in A.D. 70.

When you visit The Holy Land Experience, you do not just look at exhibits or pictures on the wall, you also have the opportunity to learn from biblical archaeologists who present and explain the world of the Holy Land. If you arrive when the park opens, then be sure to go on the 30 minute walking tour conducted by one of the archaeologists. Other presentations include a Moses Presentation, exploring the life of Moses, a Qumran Caves presentation, looking at the caves where the Dead Sea Scrolls were found and a Great Temple presentation, which explores the temple built by Herod and destroyed by the Romans in 70 AD.

One of the must-see features of the Holy Land Experience is a motion-picture which tells the story of Esther. “One Night With a King” follows a young girl who rises from peasant to princess by going against the culture and seeking the King’s heart rather than the riches of the kingdom.

The Bible also comes to life in live shows which combine drama and music. Here is what the official website says about these shows: “Our live shows and productions range from historical recreations to theatrical and musical showcases. Performed both indoors and outdoors with original dialog, music, and lyrics, these presentations are a central part of the mission to communicate the gospel truth of God’s Word.”

Some of the live shows include: Moses, Wedding at Cana, The Ministry of Jesus and The Last Supper. Not all shows are presented on all days and the schedules are subject to change so you will have to consult with the park to find out what will be showing when you visit.

The Holy Land Experience in Orlando, Florida is open Monday through Saturday from 10:00 am until 6:00 pm. An adult one-day pass costs , seniors are admitted for , children under 5 are free and a one-day pass for children 6-12 costs .

The park is located in Orlando, off Interstate 4, at Exit 78, at the corner of Conroy and Vineland Roads. To use an online mapping/direction service, enter the following physical address for The Holy Land Experience: 4655 Vineland Road, Orlando, FL 32811, Telephone: 1-800-447-7235 or 407-872-2272.

If you plan to visit The Holy Land Experience, give yourself a full-day so you can see and experience everything that is on offer.

3 Romantic East Coast Destinations

Would you like to take your significant other to a romantic destination? If you can afford to take an extra day or two to do more than just dinner, there are a great many East coast destinations all within a couple hours of each other that are wonderful in the winter.

Although it can be blustery cold in late fall and winter, New York City can be a very romantic place for couples. Many couples could use a relationship refresher, and what better way to get back to basics than with a romantic spring-time stroll through Central Park or a horse-and-buggy ride instead? Close by is Rockefeller Center, where, in the late fall and winter, you can ice skate on the open-air rink below the flags of the world and all of the sightseers on the street. Top this off with a cup of steamy cocoa or some hot, sweet peanuts or almonds from the street vendor and you have a very romantic, enjoyable afternoon for not a lot of money.

Of course, New York hotels do not come cheap and a wonderful dinner that evening is a must. If you enjoy being downtown when you visit New York, the Soho Grand is a simple, boutique hotel that is even pet friendly should you need to bring a non-human significant other. It will not be cheap, but the room does come with a complimentary pet goldfish upon request! The Tribeca Grand is its sister hotel, and if you choose to stay in this area you can visit Robert DeNiro’s restaurant while you are in the area. Another unique and romantic suggestion is to dine on a yacht. New York’s harbors boast wonderful dining aboard ships that sail around the island of Manhattan while you feast. What a memorable dinner that would be! The typical visitor to New York would, of course, make sure to see a show on Broadway after dinner or after their day out and about on the streets of New York. Certainly, there is plenty to choose from if you decide to choose this city that never sleeps for your getaway.

Another wonderful but completely different East coast destination is the Pennsylvania Pocono Mountains. Only two and a half hours from New York City, the Poconos offers beautiful scenery and plenty to do either during the spring and summer months or during winter. Depending on the town, it is full of quaint little shops and big manufacturing operations that offer everything from antiques to chocolates to candles. If you enjoy taking scenic rides and shopping ‘til you drop, this could be just the perfect destination.

If you are more of an outdoors type, the Pennsylvania Poconos offers some very good skiing to keep you active through both day and night. Some of the resorts offer lodges with fireside dining and lovely villas to come home to after a full day of snow and sun. Some of the villas come with their own private hot tubs, and we know how romantic a hot tub can be!

Perhaps you would rather have everything included in your short time away? There are a number of romantic, all-inclusive resorts in the mountains of Pennsylvania that have made the Poconos a favorite with honeymooners on the East coast. Caesars Pocono Resort and Cove Haven are just two of the resorts that offer secluded, top-notch room selections. Depending on how much you are willing to spend, you can even book a room with its own private swimming pool! If you don’t want to go quite that crazy, most rooms come with fireplaces and heart-shaped Jacuzzi tubs, room service and complimentary champagne, and some have saunas and round, mirrored beds as well. It’s all about togetherness at these resorts, and they cater to the couple. What more can you ask for from a romantic destination?

Another top destination for romance on the east is the New England shore towns. Believe it or not, the shoreline can be extremely romantic even during the winter months. The towns are no longer full of the music and festivities of the summer, and long gone are the young and loud partygoers. Instead, you are left with the quiet calm of the locals, many of whom operate bed and breakfast inns throughout the year. You can still enjoy an amazing seafood feast in the later fall and winter months; the difference is that it is prepared in front of a fireplace at a bed and breakfast, rather than al fresco at some seaside cabana. While the latter is fine when you are sunning with family and friends, it can be quite relaxing and romantic to enjoy a bowl of hot chowder and fine sea fare at dinner, prepared in someone’s home with the utmost care, knowing that a four-poster, warm quilted bed awaits you in this old farmhouse by the sea when you are ready to retire.

No matter which city or resort you choose, you really cannot go wrong with any one of these romantic East coast destinations.

Travel Vouchers As Door Prizes

No matter what your event is, you will be sure to bring in a good crowd when you use travel vouchers as door prizes. Depending on what your event is, you may even get local merchants to donate the travel vouchers for advertisement. Perhaps it is a charity or fund raising event that you are organizing. If that is the case, you can check with local companies such as travel agencies, AAA or other merchants for donations for the event which they can use as a tax right off, while you benefit from having great door prizes to attract a better crowd.

Be careful to keep a close eye on the expiration dates on the vouchers, as some merchants may put a stipulation on the travel time. This may not be favorable to many wanting to use them as they have to travel around black out dates. So be sure to check the stipulations on the travel vouchers before accepting them. The better voucher you get with little to no black out dates will be the better choice as your perspective audience will be more apt to bite on the better vouchers.

Company functions, such as the yearly company picnic, are also great events to use travel vouchers. Depending on where you have the event, you may be able to get free vouchers. Let’s say you are having the company party at a local resort, you can check with the manager there for what they offer in deals that may give you travel vouchers for door prizes. This way, you can get a discount for having the party with them and you can pass out prizes that will allow your employees to enjoy their own private stay at the very resort where your event was held.

You can even use travel vouchers to attract people in for a presentation you are having, to launch a new product. You can send out invitation letters to your potential customers announcing your event and letting them know of the great travel vouchers they can win just for showing up to hear your presentation. Many times, you can buy vouchers for these types of events in bulk and for next to nothing, so shop around a bit before making your final decision.

Travel vouchers are definitely a great way to go when choosing your door prizes. Most often, people will have a choice of their destination, which makes the vouchers perfect for anyone. Even the pickiest of travelers can choose their own destination.

Flora and Fauna of the Sahara

The Sahara Desert is one of the hottest places in the world. It is also the 2nd largest amongst other deserts in the world. Despite these conditions, Sahara has an ecosystem that plays host to a number of plant types and animal species that can live and sustain under its harsh climates.

The Sahara is the world’s largest desert, covering areas from Mauritania, Western Sahara, Algeria, Niger and Egypt. It also covers parts of Sudan, Libya, Chad and Mali; plus, a part of Morocco and Tunisia. The name “Sahara” comes from the Tuareg (a local tribe) language “tenere,” meaning “desert.”

Despite the seasonal rainfall, Sahara remains to be very dry. Rivers run through the region but only the Nile and Niger Rivers are permanent. The rest are created by the occasional rains and becomes dry when the weather changes. Oases can be found in a few areas where there are underground aquifers.

Thousands of years ago, based on the petroglyphs found on rocks and artifacts in the area, Sahara had more humidity and life than it does now. At present, Sahara is getting bigger in coverage. It is said that Sahara is expanding by as much as 30 miles per year.

Global warming and farming are the reasons behind this phenomenon. Despite this condition, some species of plants and animals have learned to adapt to the harsh environment.

The Saharan Fauna
Sahara’s most domesticated animals are goats and dromedary camels. Due to their endurance and speed, dromedary camels are the favorite animals of nomads.

The “deathstalker” scorpion (Leirurus quinquestriatus) is also one of the living organisms that survive in the desert. Its venom is very dangerous but rarely kills a healthy adult.

Monitor lizards, sand vipers, fennec fox, hyrax and the ostrich, a flightless bird which have become rare, can still be found in the region. The addax, a large white antelope that has become a type of endangered species can also be found here. In fact, the Addax has fully adapted to the conditions of the desert and it can remain there for months, even a whole year, without drinking.

The Saharan cheetahs are very cautious animals that flee from human presence, with only a few hundred remaining on its population.

Birds that can be seen flying the Saharan skies are the black-throated firefinch and the African silverbill among other species. Bird species count more than 300 already.

Other animal lives in the Sahara include wild gazelles, antelopes, jackals, foxes, badgers and the hyena gerbil as well as the jerboa, cape hare, desert hedgehog, barbary sheep and the onyx. You will also find here some deer, wild ass, baboon, sand fox, weasel and mongoose.

The desert eagle owls, large brown and white birds called Houbara bustards camouflage themselves under the sand and boulders while searching for rodents and lizards.

Addax and oryx antelopes are among the most threatened species of all desert wildlife because of animal hunting.

One noteworthy species in the eco-region is the scarab beetle. It is believed in the ancient Egyptian mythology that these insects are associated with new life and rebirth. Scarab beetles thrive in the Sahara desert up to this day.

Many desert animals search for food at night because of the cooler temperature. It is more convenient for them to hunt without the glaring heat of the desert sun.

Saharan Flora
Considering the vast coverage of the region, flora species of the central Sahara Desert is estimated to include only more or less than 500 species. Most of these belong to the xerophytes and ephemeral plants (locally called Acheb), with halophytes in wetter areas.

A variety of succulents, lichens and shrubs can be found along Mauritania and the Western Sahara. They are sustained by the moisture generated areas of the Atlantic Coast. Other vegetation includes scattered patches of grasses, shrubs and trees which are mostly found in the highlands, also in the oases and near river beds. Some plant species have fully adjusted to the climate. It can even germinate within 3 days of rain and propagate seeds within 2 weeks afterwards.

Dates, corn and fruits also grow in the more or less 200,000 square kilometers of the Saharan fertile Oases. These few fertile regions are nourished by underground rivers and basins which can be found in depressions (areas under sea level) and artesian wells.

In general, aside from the already inhospitable environment of the desert, flora and fauna also feel the growing pressure of the times. The continuing climatic changes and human exploitation of the desert increases this pressure even more.

Free Alternatives to Dallas Texas Attractions: 10 Tips For Family Fun in McCurtain County

Gas prices and higher grocery bills don’t have to mean the end of the Dallas/Fort Worth (the Metroplex) family road trip. Where can you find an alternative to the Metroplex area family vacation spots? Where can your budget-conscious family go during the fall months for a weekend getaway? The answer: Beavers Bend Resort Park area in Southeast Oklahoma’s McCurtain County, a mere three-hour drive – less than a gas tank away from Dallas. The area was voted by LIFE magazine as one of the “100 Places to See in Your Lifetime” and by The Dallas Observer as the “Best Getaway from Dallas.”

Once you arrive, make the Beavers Bend Resort Park area your home base. There is lodging and cabins to fit every budget. Then explore the region’s many low-cost or free offerings. Most anything your heart desires is either in the park itself or nearby in the towns of Idabel, Hochatown, Valliant and Broken Bow. The kids will have a blast and your bank account will thank you profusely.

Here are 10 tips for finding free or low-cost alternatives to Dallas Texas attractions:

Tip #1: Watch the eagles fly: Witness the eagles while hiking along the Mountain Fork River and on Broken Bow Lake. Guided hikes start at the park’s nature center at 9 a.m. on Saturdays throughout the fall months. The experience is fun and educational! You’ll learn that thousands of eagles migrate south and take up residence wherever they encounter open water and plentiful food. Because of the abundance of lakes and rivers and mild winter temperatures, Oklahoma’s McCurtain County is especially attractive to these magnificent birds.

Tip #2: Visit a nature center: The Beaver Bend Resort Park’s nature center offers hayrides and storytelling by the campfire on Friday and Saturday nights.

Tip #3: Try your hand at arts and crafts: Also at the nature center, which is open all day on weekends, kids will love making arts and crafts (supplies provided). Take your handmade souvenir home with you when you leave.

Tip #4: Learn about native forests: At the park’s Forest Heritage Museum, you and the kids will learn about the area’s native forests from the time of the dinosaurs to the present day.

Tip #5: Go green: Steep yourself in wildlife conservation practices at the park’s wildlife museum.

Tip #6: Visit an arts and crafts show: The Beavers Bend Folk Festival and Craft Show held in November showcases old timey arts and crafts. More than 70 exhibitors show off their crafts, skills and food at the three-day event.

Tip #7: Experience a fair: The McCurtain County Free Fair is held in nearby downtown Idabel in October. The five-day festival includes lots of chances to let out your inner “American Idol” at the show’s talent contest, which features all manner of acts, singers, dancers, etc. The fair features baked-goods cook-offs, a tractor driving contest, beauty pageant, carnival and of course, a livestock show.

Tip #8: Rub elbows (sort of) with famous singing cowboys: While in Idabel, be sure to visit the Roy Rogers and Gene Autry Museum. But call first: it is the personal project of an Idabel resident who runs the attraction out of his home.

Tip #9: Become an expert on eating eggplant: Just outside Idabel, a short drive away is the Honey Bear Ranch, which sells organic meat and produce and offers cooking classes such as “Everything you could possibly do with eggplant.” It even has a petting zoo for the kids.

Tip #10: Learn about the region’s native populations: Don’t leave Idabel until you’ve seen the Museum of the Red River, where you can find out about the Indians who once populated Southeast Oklahoma’s McCurtain County.

With Dallas, Texas attractions often costing an arm and a leg, why not jump in the car and visit your neighbors just across the river in nearby McCurtain County? With all of the low-cost and free attractions available, you will end up saving money while visiting one of the most naturally beautiful, historically-rich areas of the country.
<div
